Amla (scientific name Phyllanthus emblica or Botanical name – Emblica officinalia) or Indian gooseberry is the fruit of the Indian gooseberry tree. The tree grows in the hill regions of India and produces abundant fruit in autumn. A sour-tasting fruit, Amla is traditionally consumed either fresh or as a sweetened and preserved product called Amla murambba. It is one of the most powerful herbs used in Ayurveda and has been recommended by doctors for several chronic conditions, especially diabetes.
Amla is low in calories and is a rich source of Vitamin C. One small Amla has as much Vitamin C as 2 medium-sized oranges. Amla is also rich in phenolic compounds like flavones and anthocyanins that have strong antioxidant capacity. It is fairly rich in minerals like calcium, iron and phosphorous and also contains B complex vitamins. So, overall the nutritional value of Amla makes it a medicinal herb promoting good health in all individuals.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Amla is an effective traditional remedy to prevent pancreatitis. Amla also contains chromium, a mineral that regulates carbohydrate metabolism and may make the body more responsive to insulin, helping to keep blood sugar at healthy levels.
According to studies, it’s the antioxidant property of Amla that makes it useful for diabetic individuals. The polyphenol-rich fruit actually has properties that can protect the body from oxidative properties of high blood sugar. The same compound is also effective in preventing insulin resistance caused due to a high fructose diet. This means that the fruit can actually assist in proper absorption of insulin leading to a drop in blood sugar in diabetics.
A study published in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition evaluated sugar lowering property of Amla in humans. It was observed that diabetic individuals who were given 1, 2 or 3 gm of Amla powder everyday had decreased levels of fasting and 2 hour post-prandial blood glucose levels after 20 days. But individuals who received 3gm of Amla powder showed significantly reduced sugar levels.
Additionally, there are various studies which show that Amla also prevents the development of complications like diabetic neuropathy and diabetes-induced heart dysfunction in type-2 diabetic individuals. All in all, Amla has a positive effect on people with diabetes.
Guduchi (Botanical Name:Tinospora Cordifolia) is a famous Ayurvedic herb, used extensively in treatment for diabetes, fever, urinary tract disorders, anemia, jaundice, asthma, cardiac disorders, etc. It is a climbing shrub with a succulent stem and papery bark that is creamy white to grey in color. The specialty of Guduchi is its ability to destroy toxins and have a rejuvenative and nourishing action on the body. It protects and guards the body from diseases.
Guduchi, popularly known as Amrutha in Ayurveda is a unique source of various types of compounds having diverse structure and has been extensively studied for its hypoglycemic activity in support of its usefulness in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Experiments have examined its antineoplastic, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, hypolipidemic, and immunologic properties.
Studies have shown that Guduchi is capable of inhibiting the action of some of the enzymes involved in increasing blood glucose levels. It has a hypoglycemic effect – that is, it tends to significantly reduce blood sugar levels and increase in the plasma insulin, hepatic glycogen and total hemoglobin as well as antioxidant activity.
Turmeric (Botanical name: Cucuma Longa)
Turmeric is hailed for is medicinal and culinary benefits since ancient times. The main ingredient of turmeric is curcumin. It is the curcumin that renders the dark golden color; it is slightly bitter and related to a mustard aroma. The highly acclaimed spice is used extensively in cooking especially in Indian cuisine, the taste and exotic fragrance.
Turmeric has been used in Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal medicine for thousands of years as a detoxification herb (as it appears to protect the liver) and as a potent anti-inflammatory.Turmeric is used to treat allergies, aches, infections, heart problems, and diabetes among other more serious health issues. There are no harmful side effects, and Turmeric is considered safe for consumption.
Research shows that turmeric does reduce many of the inflammatory signals known to be overactive in diabetes (i.e. cytokines IL-6, IL-1, and TNF) and improves the action of disrupted insulin-response pathways in diabetes (i.e. PPAR-gamma) (Shishodia et al. 2005)! One study published in the journal Nutrition shows how turmeric normalizes insulin and triglyceride levels while boosting antioxidant defenses; keeping triglyceride and insulin levels low effectively reduces your risk for numerous health conditions like metabolic syndrome, heart disease, and diabetes.
Diabetes disturbs the sugar or glucose levels in the blood. The main cause is insufficient production of insulin in the body or the body’s irresponsiveness toward insulin, which results in Type 2 diabetes. The remarkable curative properties of Turmeric treating diabetes found in trials connect the curcumin spice to adjust the insulin within the body. The control and stability of blood sugar prevents insulin resistance or sensitivity and boosts immunity thereby reducing infections.
The pancreas is responsible for producing insulin. The anti-glycaemic power of turmeric helps to maintain the proper function of the pancreas, regulate and stabilize insulin levels. The prevention of insulin resistance in the body and lowering the blood sugar levels and treat diabetes effectively.
A risk factor for diabetes is being overweight, and curcumin can control cholesterol levels. Balance sugar/glucose levels and prevent an accumulation of fats that are harmful to the body. Thereby treating issues of obesity and unwanted weight gain and preventing the onset of diabetes.
Certain infections like the virus Coxsackie B4 can cause Type 1 diabetes in humans and the antibiotic properties of turmeric help to prevent and treat the infections. High blood sugar problems are streamlined with the use of Turmeric.
